See that satisfying moment when colors bloom across the fabric?

This is exactly what happens when you try botanical printing yourself. One gentle tap, and ordinary leaves transform into extraordinary art.

Feeling that urge to grab a hammer and try it right now?

That's the power of this ancient craft—it's impossible to watch without wanting to create your own masterpiece immediately.

Botanical hammering dye — step by step

Step 1 — Prepare the alum soak

1
Mix the alum solution
Dissolve alum in water at a ratio of:
Water 100:Alum 1
Stir until fully dissolved.
2
Soak the plants
Place your botanicals into the alum solution and soak for about 15 minutes. This helps the pigment transfer and bond to fabric.
3
Pat the leaves dry
Remove leaves and gently dry off any excess water before placing them on the fabric. Moisture on the leaf surface can blur the print.

Step 2 — Hammer the print

4
Arrange leaves face-down
Place each leaf on the fabric with its back side facing up — the underside carries more pigment and shows the vein pattern most clearly.
5
Choose your hammering method
Two techniques work well:
Method A — cloth cover

Lay the leaf on the fabric. Place a second cloth on top. First trace along the veins, then hammer the full leaf surface. Peel back the cover cloth when done.

Method B — tape in place

Secure the leaf directly to the fabric with clear tape. Hammer as above. Peel off the tape once finished.

Step 3 — Fix and finish

6
Fix the colour in alum solution
Soak the finished piece in the same alum solution for another 15 minutes to set the pigment into the fibres.
7
Rinse and dry
Rinse the fabric with clean water, then hang to air dry. Your botanical print is complete!
Keep out of direct sunlight while drying for more vivid results
